RHYTHM & PITCH PACKS FOR YOUR BEGINNERS

Sing, play, create and perform with each of these Rhythm and Pitch Packs!

TEACH RHYTHM THROUGH CHANT

PROCESS

  • Teach the chant (call and response, add actions, use the Orff approach)

  • Apply the rhythms to body percussion, bucket drumming, or drumsticks on chairs.

  • Now compose with FORM, TEXTURE, TIMBRE and EXPRESSIVE TECHNIQUES before you add PITCH!

EXAMPLE:

Note: This chant was written by Australian music educator Sue Lane (not included in the book, but is used here to show what is possible).

Grade 7’s performing their own rhythm-based composition using the above chant:

And HERE is an example of what is possible with a WHOLE class/large ensemble:

MATCH rhythm with PITCH

Sample part from Rhythm and Pitch Pack #1.

PROCESS:

  1. Establishes vocabulary around key signature.

  2. Shows students the ONLY notes they need. Encourage students to work these out with each other.

  3. Words of chant are printed below pitched material. AGAIN - invite students to work this out on their own.

  4. Play in rounds, call and response, with different tutti sections (woodwind, brass, percussion etc..)

  5. Create own FORM and write in boxes below. Each box represents one full time through the melody.
