Ecology of the Soul captures the hidden qualities of our inner selves. Written for the Barker College Wind Symphony, the piece was inspired by Ethan Landy-Ariel’s vibrant Indigenous artwork Geuram, which depicts creation, community, and interconnected pathways.
Additionally, student reflections about their school—emphasizing "community," "connection," and "adventure"—forged central themes of belonging, summarized by the sentiment that community is the "reason for who I am."
The work is structured into four musical vignettes reflecting the soul's ecology:
The awakening of creativity
Mischief and adventure
The warmth of kindness and opportunity
The emotional safety to share our full selves
The piece concludes with a powerful chorale and accompanying lyrics about honoring the Earth and listening to the "winter sun inside you." Ultimately, the work hopes that by embracing vulnerability, we can share our inner selves and evolve with love, compassion, and wisdom.
