Teaching Performance Through Composition: Book 1

Perfect for bucket drumming, this book contains six rhythm-only pieces. Book Two transforms these rhythms into melodies, starting with a three melody using do-re-mi of Concert B-flat. Lesson plans and other resources included.

The Teaching Performance through Composition series has been created to help you achieve composition in the ensemble space without sacrificing rehearsal time. A set of musical materials ranging from rhythms and melodies, to ostinato patterns and accompanying figures are provided in a range of keys and capabilities. Once your students can play their bits and pieces, you are then able to collectively compose with the musical elements of structure, timbre, texture and expression to create your very own, original performance worthy pieces of music. Every one a world premiere! Commissioned by the Minnesota Band Directors Association and the Minnesota Junior Winds.

The Educational objectives of Book One are:

  • Ensemble: Establish awareness of group pulse, ensemble balance and spatial security. Form social relationships and develop self-discipline in a less structured learning space.

  • Student: Inaugurate music literacy, develop awareness of inner pulse and stimulate interrelationships between left-right hemispheres of the brain.

  • Director: Establish active and reflective learning routines; introduce yourself as a collaborative teacher; cue with face and breath.

Music Concepts: Structure/Form, Rhythm/Duration, Expressive techniques, Timbre, Texture

INSTRUMENTATION: Rhythm only. Suitable for all ensembles including bucket drumming and general music classes.
